Fern and Koru Necklace Inspired by Northland | Handmade NZ Jewellery

Ferns are a constant presence in Aotearoa, and here in Northland they feel especially alive. They surround our home, line the bush, and emerge each spring as delicate koru slowly unfurl. Over time, simply by noticing them more closely, their beauty and meaning became the inspiration for this fern and koru necklace.

The Meaning Behind the Design
The koru, the young unfurling frond of the fern, symbolises new beginnings, growth, balance, and the ongoing cycle of life. It represents movement forward while remaining connected to where we come from.
The fern itself is a symbol of strength, resilience, and deep connection to the land. It is enduring and grounding, woven into both the natural and cultural identity of Aotearoa.
This necklace brings these two forms together, allowing their meanings to sit side by side, growth and grounding, change and continuity.

A Reversible Fern and Koru Necklace
This piece is designed to be worn either way. One side reveals more of the koru, while the other highlights the fern. From both perspectives, the other element remains subtly visible in the background.
The reversible design reflects how growth and strength exist together, shifting depending on how the piece is worn.

Inspired by Place
Living in Northland, the lush bush and native plants play a large role in my work. This necklace is a quiet reflection of that environment, a reminder to slow down, observe what surrounds us, and find beauty in familiar forms.

Handcrafted in Aotearoa
Each fern and koru necklace is handcrafted with care, from carving through to finishing. Designed to be worn every day, it’s a meaningful piece that connects the wearer to nature, place, and personal growth.
